@gautham_t @MegaBeta4 at Bush II’s inauguration there were tanks outside DC but they didn’t send them in even when there was a pitched battle across the path of his motorcade for political reasons, but they were arguing like hell about it.

@gautham_t @MegaBeta4 you only. find out what was really happening on the cop side much later, if at all. At Seattle it turns out the chief of police at first refused to attack peaceful protestors then got a call directly from the sec of state, whereon his cops went totally apeshit …

@gautham_t @MegaBeta4 who would he defect to? All I’m saying is I’ve never seen such tactics, it can only mean they’re afraid the situation is threatening to spiral out of their control.

@gautham_t @MegaBeta4 Tbh I didn’t say whether it was sincere or not – if it’s a tactic it smacks of total desperation since normally cops hate anti-cop protests with a total passion, and don’t do this sort of thing even to diffuse protests they agree with

@cdrboshtette been to hundreds of actions & i never experienced a cop ordered to be nice.

@HealingAmbient no changing that within the given structure, definitely. Agreed you’d need to see mass disobedience and defection before that would start to be possible.

@guyonguyonov @Itsnotadistrac1 actually he said to trick them into thinking they had a sense of shame. So yeah. It was pure moral language.

@cdrboshtette maybe this is something that happened in the US since I left but I’d say in about 200 actions I experienced I never saw cops pretend sympathy. There are obvious reasons. It wouldn’t actually demobilise but encourage protestors.

@PlanSchrodinger @ZarahnSouthon well that’s the crucial thing – without disobedience or defections it’s meaningless but one likes to be optimistic

@cdrboshtette it’s not a game of morality, really it’s not. Why are Americans so weirdly moralistic? This shows they’re scared. They never do this shit normally.

@yung_souchi well it’s silly to read a book too many times. Honestly, even if it’s a tactic they were ordered to do, in every case (I’m sure it is in some) it still a panic tactic

@shnupz seems likely, in most cases, but even if so it’s a desperate move – you never see this thing normally. So if it were all pure PR, it would be almost as significant as sincere wavering.

@taketheZtrain well yeah, it’s meaningless until you get defections, or mass refusals to obey orders, but even if it’s all a PR stunt (some obviously is) it smacks of desperation.

@burn_controlled really? not a very common one. If they resort to it, it’s a sign of panic, which was kind of my point.

@SaraHLahtinen @morpheo well yeah let’s see. At the moment I’d say we’re seeing a panic reaction. Tactic or not, it’s like a last resort. But it’d have to be disobedience by the cops before it gets meaningful

@Itsnotadistrac1 @guyonguyonov um, cops don’t care what you think about their moral status. They really don’t. Moral status is an activist obsession. Not a cop one. This is a panic move which seems to show a complete fear of loss of control

@HealingAmbient I also know that they never resort to such things normally; I’m sure some of it is staged, but if so, it’s a pretty desperate tactic

@algedonode well in the end that’s true, but as a propaganda move it’d be total desperation. Cops generally HATE anti-cop protestors and almost never use this tactic even for protestors they like

@Quatr_us @muke10101 in some cases. The guy who joined the march in the video was pretty cheesy and a bad actor. But cops do waver if only out out practicality if they think they’re losing.

@Quatr_us @gautham_t that’s like a perfect example of why the argument makes no sense. It’s not like they’re luring you in to take your armour off and then they’ll be able to do something they couldn’t otherwise. That’s not how it works. If its pure tactic it shows a certain panic on their side

@Itmechr3 @f_a_r_t_s look up what happened in Seattle in 1999 – cops were simultaneously crying, refusing to repress, then going crazy & attacking everyone in sight. That’s what happens when the system starts breaking down.

@LumpyProIe cops really don’t like anti-cop protests & this would be an unprecedented tactic in my experience. Never seen it. Have you?
