@MarcusDAurelius are you in the business of buying bridges? You could make a tidy profit! I happen to have the rights to one you might be interested in.

@Ayan_mmxvii @bzjorts I actually mentioned them since they’re the only country I know of who had two left wing female heads of state in a row

@daniosauris @10000hamsters Well maybe you think organizations drafting resolutions condemning someone for asking a whimsical survey question about a hypothetical New Zealand empire isn’t an hysterical reaction but If so I guess we have different standards

@kvnrogan @dynamic_effort Our agents from San Marino will use their cover as innocent gamblers to unveil your plans and thwart you

@Timjag72 @ChrisvdKieboom hypothesis: because wages are supposed to be compensation for suffering; therefore work that 1. provides an obvious benefit to others, 2. is in any way enjoyable in itself, should not be compensated as much or at all

1

@wilesroyd well yes they also create more risks than would have to be there, that way. While saying their profits are their compensation for “undergoing risk”

@omedyentral this despite most of those studies are undertaken by people trained to think supply/demand has to determine such things

@omedyentral empirical studies tend to show supply/demand tends to determine about 20% of commodity prices and a smaller proportion of wages/salaries

@Deixis9 @Old_soul84 I keep wondering how self-conscious it is but if you play a game of “if I were POTUS & secretly trying to destroy American imperial hegemony” you can pretty much predict his every move

@TwitrSpace @Old_soul84 that’s funny I didn’t even notice that! Yes it’s like the political version of Jumbo Shrimp or something

@FarlaneTeri least respected job was supermarket bagger (cashiers did better), they actually came out just below drug dealers! But I assume this is because their work was considered both lowly AND useless, since you can very well bag the groceries yourself 2/

1

@FarlaneTeri though even there it would be interested to see the numbers. My mom used to warn us not to fuck up in school “you don’t want to end up a supermarket bagger!” I remember seeing a survey of most & least respected professions, & forget who was on top, but remember they were last 1/

1

@FarlaneTeri a legitimate point. I was thinking of “treated with respect on the job” more than how they are generally thought of by the larger public.

@cyancollier best line I’ve heard this pandemic: “how about this time we give nurses a ‘special bonus’ 2-3x their annual salary, and give a nice shiny badge to financiers instead.”

@GTweetbell I’d actually go further: if you accept the “capital as power” argument, they actually create capital. The US trade imbalance is maintained through seignorage, & the world’s main trade currency has for 500 years almost always been that of its dominant military power

@omedyentral It’s easy to parrot ideology but actually, there’s no empirical evidence for this. You might want to check out the recent work of Blair Fix who actually did an empirical study.

@djhanson_87 yes then there’s be a lot more jobs typically held by women, who are less likely to die on the job, but surely much more likely on the whole to undergo psychological damage.

@NateAFischer America has long had an acute shortage of trained nurses and an equally huge glut of corporate lawyers. Shockingly, nurses’ salaries did not skyrocket, nor did lawyers’ fees fall. No, it’s just power.

2

@Old_soul84 well I do have Permanent Leave to Remain, but I’m kind of an anarchist you know. Thanks though!

@thecoleslaws @BlackHumor712 @it_didnt_work No but your comment reflects your obsession with whiteness. I effectively said “are there any decent left wing govts out there. Maybe Jacinda Arden?” And you screamed “but she’s white! She’s white!!” So many American leftists can’t imagine anything in non-racial terms

@ChrisvdKieboom not really, no. For instance for about 10 years (don’t know if it’s still true) the US was experiencing an acute shortage of nurses & glut of corporate lawyers. Nurses’ salaries did not shoot up, neither did corporate lawyers’ fees decrease.
